Schools play a significant role in the promotion and prevention of mental health. Schools provide a great opportunity to not only identify students having emotional difficulties, but also to promote overall social and moral development including emotional wellbeing. According to studies, children and adolescents with emotional difficulties are more prone to academic failure, self-harm, substance abuse, vulnerable to criminal activities and violence. Additionally, children and adolescents who have strong emotional and social well-being report greater satisfaction with their families, friendships and academic success. Teaching can be both gratifying and demanding at the same time, and teachers have a big obligation to educate their students.
Teachers will benefit by becoming knowledgeable about school mental health. It is Most of the teachers ask for assistance in promoting wellness in the classroom and in identifying and helping students who are struggling with their mental health. It is simpler for instructors to control disruptive classroom behavior and assist students’ academic progress when they feel more prepared to address students’ mental health.
As a part of the PICS School Project, PICS Nepal has been working at William Public School located at Sunakothi, Lalitpur since Srawan 2080 B.S. From Kindergarten to grade 10, students are receiving mental health service. PICS Nepal works in triangular method regarding school mental health project. It is working with teachers, parents and students while providing both individual and group sessions on the basis of need and observation. PICS Nepal’s therapists are also providing psychoeducation to students, teachers and parents on various mental health topics such as stress management, anger management, academic motivation, parenting skills, and so on.
